October 2014: Approval granted for the former Royal Mail sorting office to be transformed into a new primary and secondary school.

September 2016: Northampton International Academy first opens with 178 reception and Year 7 pupils. The children and staff are in high-quality temporary accommodation in the grounds of neighbouring Castle Academy while work is underway on the conversion of the old Royal Mail building.

A strategic board is also created to lead on the governance of the new school.

September 2017: The school welcomes new reception and Year 7 pupils, taking its total roll to 440 pupils.

September 2018: NIA moves into its new building now work is complete. Its total roll is now up to 780 pupils – with Years 7, 8 and 9 in the secondary phase and reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in primary – and around 70 teaching and support staff.

A new local advisory board replaces the strategic board to take over the governance of the school.

September 2019: The school grows again to 1,350 pupils, now accommodating Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 in the secondary phase, reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 in primary and its first-ever sixth form intake.

September 2020: The school now has all year groups in secondary from Year 7 through to 13, and reception to Year 4 in primary. 

September 2023: NIA has continued to grow with more than 1,700 pupils across the school.

September 2024: NIA opens a new dedicated Sixth Form hub on the Billing Road - NIA6
